Printing has been around in some form or another since the 4th century. Starting as carving pages on to wood blocks, which were then pressed onto silk or a basic form of paper using inks. It wasn’t until 700 hundred years later that a Chinese inventor came up with the idea of using individual clay letters that could be moved around to form words and sentences. After another 200 years of using the clay forms, a Korean made strides in the development of press by introducing metal moveable type 2 centuries before Gutenburg.

During the 15th century, Johannes Gutenberg improved upon existing technology and created a new system of movable type, which he fixed to a wooden frame. This wooden framed printing machine became known as the Gutenberg Press. This type of printing machine was in use up until the 19th century and can still be found today for a traditional wood block printing look. 

These days DIGITAL and LITHO printing are the norm. Digital is a great cost effect method for shorter runs and Litho printing is better for longer print runs. If you require a special colour, metallic, foil or a spot varnish to give your print that wow factor then Litho is the way to go.
